Heather's Counselling Services
I offer various approaches which integrate the mind and body in the therapeutic process.
My interests are personal growth, childhood wounds, loneliness, bullying, medical trauma, chronic illness, disability, and acute trauma.
Goals may include having a safe and supportive space to express emotions, feeling more connected to yourself and others, and enhancing coping skills.
Sessions are always client-led, meaning you know yourself better than anyone else, and you are allowed to be human.
"All emotions use the body as their theatre." -Neuroscientist Dr. Antonio Damasio

Heather's therapeutic approaches

Somatic therapy
Somatic therapy recognizes that we carry feelings and reactions in our bodies, so our bodies should be included in the therapeutic process. Somatic therapy is particularly helpful for individuals who are not prepared to directly discuss a problem or trauma. Sessions may include the use of imagery, body scanning, posture or small movements, and self-soothing.

Ecotherapy
Ecotherapy recognizes that connecting to nature and animals promotes and enhances healing. Sessions may include strolling through the meadow, sitting at the pond, or getting to know the animals.

Chairwork
Chairwork externalizes communication with past, present, or future versions of ourselves or others so that we can vocalize unexpressed thoughts and reflect.

Tapping
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Thought Field Therapy (TFT) both involve using our fingers to tap on various parts of the body to process emotions and imprint positive messaging.

Havening
When we feel lonely or overwhelmed, or bodies need reassurance. Havening facilitates safety and self-soothing using touch on our hands, shoulders, and face.

Comfort therapy
Comfort therapy's purpose is safety and connection through touch. This might look like guided self-soothing, or consensual seated touch which may include holding, squeezing, or stroking the hands, arms, shoulders, back, face, or head. There is an emphasis on being attentive to body safety, cues, and boundaries.

*Note that comfort therapy is provided as a separate service from the other therapeutic approaches listed above, it is not covered by health benefits, and it is available to individuals 18+.
